The Wall

I know exactly where I was when the Wall came down.

Reagan had firmly declared:

“Tear down that wall.”

I was in the back of a pickup truck on the way to a party. The sky was filled with stars. Roger Waters was on the sound system doing:

The Wall.

A wall is an old technology that speaks of isolation and other intolerant type words.

It’s a problem.

Now to control the borders is another thing. The southern border has long been a scar, and it’s a complicated subject.

Yet, here’s the thing:

We are at a near 50-Year low on the amount of illegals entering.

The lie that it’s a sudden national emergency is a lie.

A huge, Beautiful, 10-foot concrete wall that Mexico will pay for is a fantasy.

Always has been.

Even the people calling for it knew that it was a way to bring attention and hatred to the issue.

There certainly needs a solution to the problem of illegal immigration but from day one I have believed that Trump was elected because:

He offered simplistic solutions to highly complex problems.

We are watching, in real time, the pushback on the simplistic aspect of his ‘leadership’.

The handling of the issue only further illustrates the problem.

Holding a portion of the government hostage to get the problem solved is also a highly simplistic, child-like approach.

This is causing everyone to dig in.

Now it’s about saving face.

Many of us dealt with our children. We simply couldn’t give in if the child was going off and being absolutely unreasonable in their demands.

“Who’s paying for the wall?” He’d ask.

“Mexico!”

I wonder how it would’ve gone if it was answered this way.

“Who’s paying for the wall?”

“We don’t know! But we’ll shut down the government until we do!”

Simplistic.

When complex thinking is required.

And 40 years down the road a kid will ride in the back of a truck as a future president cries:

“Tear down that wall.”

Walls are barriers.

Putting up barriers has never once solved an issue.

Just my two cents.
