Do You Enjoy a Good Debate?

I have a college buddy who loved doing the following skit with me.

Him: You don't know even know how to argue.
Me: Yes, I do
Him: No, you don't.
Me Yes I do. I argue better than you do.
Him: No, you don't. I've never met anyone who argues worse than you.
Me: You're the worst.
Him: No, I'm not.

You get the idea. We'd go back and forth and drive other people crazy. (No wonder we had trouble picking up girls).

Yet we also loved to debate anything at all. I've had a number of friends who've also fallen into that category. I'll argue anything and I'll do it until the veins in my neck pop out - even if I'm wrong. (Right? Johnny C.).

This all comes to mind because of tonight's debate. There are a lot of people predicting that Sarah Palin is going to make a complete ass of herself. I heard one talking head say that it will be a lot like watching a car crash.

It will probably be a lot less. Historically these debates are filled with cliches and little information. The name-calling is held to a minimum and the only real moment I can recall was when Lloyd Benson embarrassed Dan Quayle with the JFK remark.

What would be refreshing? I suggest the name calling that usually goes along with my personal debates. Let's use my college buddy and me as the vice-presidential candidates.

Him: Hey, dumb ass -you don't even understand why we're in Iraq.

Me: Excuse me, bald-bastard, but I do.

Him: No, you don't. And abortion? Forget about it porky, you don't even know the name of the decision that was handed down to make abortion legal.

Me: Uh, dip-shit, it was Roe versus Wade. And your stand on capital punishment is barbaric, you honestly don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

Him: Yes, I do, rat bastard.

Me: No, you don't. You don't even know how to argue.....

It would be the highest-rated debate ever.

My Buddy, Dave

Way back in 1997, I started working with a steel erection company out of Syracuse. I was coming straight from a long stint with a steel erector here in Buffalo so I knew my stuff when it came to steel erection safety rules. On day one, I met with the safety director and he was just getting started as a safety guy, but man, he certainly cared about the guys he worked with. Dave was a good man from the start. Mom & Ollie

 Ollie Stadium is a mess. The heavy rains rendered the backyard a mud pit and even though we threw in the side yard, the Big O was looking for more, and we were both covered in mud. I had to take some steam out of him somehow so I suggested we go visit Grandma. Ollie hates the car, but he laid quietly as we made the trip. We even brought the football because there is plenty of room to play at Grandma’s. Mom opened the door and started laughing. I thought about the love she had for every single dog we ever had. Oliver was quick to give my Mom a kiss, and then he stood beside her. The love between Mom and Dogs is a mutual bond. Through the years, Mom would make breakfast for the dogs.  Fried eggs, toast, bacon… She would wrap Christmas gifts for them. “To Jeter, Love Santa,” she would write on the cards. They played with the big chicken that made a lot of noise. Mom tossed the football and Ollie brought it back to her. As the visit drew to a close I headed for the door.  “C’mon, Oliver,”
