The Houston Astroles

So, MLB handed down the punishment for the Astros.

The general manager and manager were each suspended for a year and then promptly fired. The team also was fined the maximum and lost draft picks.

They deserved every ounce of that punishment, and what is sad is that they actually may have won a World Series because of that cheating.

Think back to 2017.

The Astros beat the Yankees 4 games to 3. They won every game of that series at home and hit a lot better at home than one the road.

It was a well-played, exciting series. Hats off to them. They won.

Turns out it wasn’t fair and square.

Their hitters, through an elaborate system of cheating, knew when a fastball was coming.

To top it off, Jose Altuve got the MVP that year even though he was behind Aaron Judge in every single statistical category except batting average.

And people are downplaying it...

...in Houston.

“You ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.”

“Everyone steals signs!”

Well, not like that.

Thing is, there are billions of dollars at stake.

A lot of teams in professional sports appear to take advantage of the rules...

...check the NFL. Every single team has been fined for deception. New England has a horrible reputation (but don’t tell me about the freaking air in the ball) and they deserve it.

This Astros scandal is on par with spy gate.

And there’s a bonus because it appears that Alex Cora, the Red Sux manager was a driving force behind that Astros season and then he took what he learned and won a World Series in Boston.

And Boston’s series is also in question.

Their punishment is next.

And it bothers me a lot when it comes to baseball because of the numbers attached.

When I was a kid I knew all the HR leaders, by number and in order.

Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Frank Robinson, Mantle.

Royalty.

Maris held the season HR record after nearly killing himself to take it from Ruth.

And then the garbage started.

Bonds, Sosa and McGwire.

“They’re cheating,” I said when it was happening.

I’m still sickened by McGwire standing there with the Maris family.

It remains the worst thing I can think of in sports. He knew he was cheating and he took the congratulations. Same with Bonds.

And I don’t know how many homers they are credited with.

To my mind, Aaron is the all-time home run king and Maris owns the single season record.

I won’t acknowledge the cheaters.

I won’t accept the Astros as 2017 champs or the Sux as 2018 title holders.

Knowing when a fastball is coming.

Laying off the breaking pitches.

A real lousy way to compete.
