The ESPY's - Jim Kelly
Jim Kelly was a star when he arrived in Buffalo in the 1980's.
The fact that he led the team to 4 straight Super Bowls made him an even bigger star.
He could've run for mayor, for sure.
After he retired, Kelly, who famously cried when he found out that he was drafted by Buffalo, abandoned all plans to move elsewhere.
The Kelly Family settled here...
...and they are all around town and the majority of the community loves them.
(For any famous people there are detractors - haters, the kids call them).
Yet, the family went through hell.
Hunter, their son, suffered with a rare disease and the community was sad when he passed away. Then Jim got sick.
I watched his speech last night, and I felt all sorts of things.
Proud, happy, sad, nostalgic, and sad again.
That's life and the message of the speech was perseverance.
Staying strong.
Battling back.
Having faith.
Jim did a great job and he deserved the award.
Now, I hope that he fully recovers.
I've met the Kelly family. Jill generously wrote the forward for 'House of Miracles'.
We even visited sick children in the hospital together. Jim and I have had a number of friendly encounters.
They're good, genuine people.
They've battled back every step of the way.
On Thursday Jim posted a short video of the family walking down the hall of the hotel, a rap song playing in the background, Jim holding the ESPY and all of them dancing and smiling.
It's cool.
Persevering.
Good for them!
Now stay healthy!
