Those Kids

It’s very difficult to not think about the mass shooting in Florida, but they say that at every tragedy there are signs of heaven.

I saw or listened to a number of interviews from kids who survived by hiding in a closet, or just being lucky enough not to be stricken.

A funny thing happened.

The kids were ready.

They formulated arguments, slapped down the talking points, and demanded action.

One after another they called out the Governor, the senator, all of Congress and the President.

They answered every call for ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ with an explicit cry for action.

“You’re the adults. We’re the children. Do something!” Was the central theme.

And the next generation has listened to all of the complaints about how they’re all about participation trophies and tide pods and sitting on their asses.

The kids I watched, filled with grief, weren’t just sitting back and taking it.

“They just might be all right,” I thought.

Every generation believes that the coming generation is soft. For the last 200 years adults all over the world have been saying:

“The kids today!”

I have three kids who are now adults or are on the verge. Their lives have been different, but it’s a different world now.

I see more compassion.

I hear more tolerance.

I know that they have a much clearer eye as to what racism looks like...

...and judging from what I heard from the Broward kids...

...they want work and they want it now.

“We don’t want your condolences,” one girl screamed.

“We want you to figure it out.”

Smart kids.

If you have a chance listen to Emma Gonzalez give her speech. Sobbing, and shouting she was very clear about what needs to be done.

Sadly, we let them down.

Will there continue to be collective shrugs of the shoulders as we wait for the next community to be devastated?

The kids are not going to take it.
