All That We’ve Learned

“This is all that we’ve learned about living.”

That lyric from the John Mellencamp song, “Check it Out” was stuck in my head all of Yesterday afternoon.

This was my reality.

I was still feeling lousy, but I had to do some training for about 100 people. I was well-prepared and in a good mood. We had some laughs, but had a tremendous discussion as well. The best I felt over the last three days was when I was speaking.

Got off the stage and headed for my phone. The homepage was locked, but there were ten news updates.

I saw two words:

“School Shooting.”

And the Mellencamp lyric popped into my mind.

We can’t stop this?

We can’t even begin a discussion regarding slowing it down??

I’m ashamed.

I’m an adult in today’s world, and we, as a society, can not provide our children a safe place to gather to get educated.

It’s not only that we CAN’T...

...we WON’T.

Won’t even talk about it!

The thoughts and prayers guys were out.

That will be followed by the, “It’s too soon to think about changes.”

Day 3 will be an attack by people who are saying, “It’s a slippery slope.”

And it will be pushed out as the lead story...

...by a carefully orchestrated argument about coming for our rights.

After everyone is in the ground...

...we’ll move on.

And the clock will tick towards the next one.

There will be a next one, and one after that, and one after that, and one after that.

Thoughts and Prayers?

Yeah, we need ‘em.

We need to pray that somehow we will find a national conscience and figure out how to offer our citizens a way to not live in fear of being gunned down.

This is all that we’ve learned about living?

Seems we should be further along.

Or do we just not really care?

There HAS to be a way.

We’re better than this.

But then again, maybe we aren’t.
