White House Correspondence Dinner

Through the years I’ve made funny speeches in front of hundreds of people.

I’ve been asked to do those talks because the people who asked me to speak knew that I’d be funny, and most of the time I understand my job...

...and I let them all know, right up front, that I’m going to swear.

I’ve never really been called out on it, and I’ve always had a great time doing it, because despite the “risky” language I have a few rules...

...I don’t use anyone as a target...

...other than myself, or people I’ve made up to get my point across.

So, I’m a little uncomfortable with the roast format of the WHCD.
A lot of it is downright mean.

Yet, I’m all for comedy. We all need to laugh. We all want to laugh.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway were fair game, if you ask me.

They are spokeswomen for a man who takes lot shots at a lot of people, day in and day out. They had to know what that dinner would be.

The comedian, Michelle Wolf, absolutely destroyed them with a often brilliant, extremely clever delivery of some really nasty material.

She has zip to apologize for.

This past year I was invited to speak to a company where I was expected to be funny. I was yawning in the moment right before I was supposed to be on stage, but minutes later, I had the room roaring as I told a story I’d told a hundred times before. At the first break one of the owners came up to me and asked me how I could turn it on and off like that.

“I feed off the room,” I said.

So, that’s why I can’t imagine doing an act where the room is groaning, or where the intended target is trying to hide.

The fallout from the show was swift.

I read about Wolf being hammered for cursing...

...which is just an excuse.

People swear.

You have to expect to hear the f-word at a comedy show.

Others are offended because Sanders, Trump and Conway got destroyed.

I couldn’t do that sort of comedy show, but, spare me!

The three mentioned above have spewed plenty of alternative facts, and it was a chance to have at them.

They deserved it.

But that’s not to say that they’re the first to face the music.

Only Reagan missed an appearance and that’s because he was shot.

All others have shown up to take their lumps.

Laughs are needed.

Fake outrage needs to go away.
