How it Works

The Bruce record is out today!

Yet, the documentary on the making of the record dropped yesterday, and it’s crazy, but I’d only heard 2 of the songs before settling in to watch.

If you have an hour and a half to watch something in 2020 - ‘Letter to You’ - is the thing to watch.

And I’m biased, the music is astounding, but how it’s shot is also breathtaking and Bruce’s words, as he speaks of death and loss and grieving and aging...

...brought tears to two sets of eyes here as I watched with Kathy.

The talent of each and every band member is on full display and we had a conversation about how impossible it seems that someone can play the harmonica and the guitar at the same time while also singing when the harp playing ends.

The music packs a wallop as the photos of the band in much younger days flash by.

The bones of all of it is in the summation that Bruce offers near the end of it.

About how the beauty of life is in the living life to the fullest each day.

He mentions taking pride in your work...

...and being there for your friends and your family...

...and he mentions loss and grief and he doesn’t gloss over any of it.

He ties it all together.

The New Jersey landscape is covered in a light snow and the camera zooms by above the trees.

“And keep going. Just keep going,” Bruce implores.

I glanced over at Kathy, who lost her Mom and sister this year.

“How beautiful is that?” Kathy asked.

“Unbelievable,” I said.

Watch it.

It’s 2020...

...first truly great thing I’ve seen all year.

Now I know what happens from here:

Bruce’s creativity spurs mine.

That’s just how it works.

“Record is out tomorrow?” Kathy asked.

“Yep!”

“So you’ll be mentally out of range for a few days?”

“I imagine. That’s the way it goes.”

Today is a very, very good day.
