D.B. of the Week - Greg Anthony

We watch a lot of college basketball in my house.

My son Sam loves the Villanova Wildcats.

So much so that we have to watch nearly every game.

I don't know how, but he finds the games on channels that can only be played on the big television.

"You're going to bed at nine," he'll announce to me. "The Wildcats are on."

Yet I use television as background noise, really. I'll go to social media, read newspapers, send emails...all the while listening to the hoops and hollers of a crazed fan.

I find myself rooting for Villanova, of course...but I also hear all the announcers and know the standings.

One such announcer...Greg Anthony...who used to do the games for CBS...is now the D.B. of the Week.

Anthony lost his job this week.

You know why?

Not because he wasn't a good announcer...

Not because he didn't know the game...

Not because he wanted more money...

Nope.

He lost his job (which I'm sure paid him millions) because he was arrested.

Drugs?

Domestic violence?

Nope and nope.

Anthony was arrested for solicitation of a prostitute.

Seriously.

A 47-year-old man was picked up by the police for trying to pick up and pay for the services of a prostitute.

Just a weird story, actually.

"He's a good announcer," my boys said.

He was.

No one will touch him now.

(Figuratively).

He lost a great job, calling the game he loved, for a crime that is 'only' punishable by a fine less than $2,000.

That's a D.B. move.

And one may ask...who is he really hurting?

Well...himself...for one...that's a tough gig to lose.

Congrats, Greg Anthony...

11 years in the NBA.

A great college career.

A good announcer.

Millions of dollars...

and

You'll be remembered as 'that dude who tried to pick up the prostitute'

(there seriously has to be a lesson there)

and

D.B. of the Week, of course.

My Buddy, Dave

Way back in 1997, I started working with a steel erection company out of Syracuse. I was coming straight from a long stint with a steel erector here in Buffalo so I knew my stuff when it came to steel erection safety rules. On day one, I met with the safety director and he was just getting started as a safety guy, but man, he certainly cared about the guys he worked with. Dave was a good man from the start. He’d say things like: “You’re so full of beans.” Just a down to earth, hardworking guy who became a fast friend. We drove all around New York State setting up jobs. Mom & Ollie

 Ollie Stadium is a mess. The heavy rains rendered the backyard a mud pit and even though we threw in the side yard, the Big O was looking for more, and we were both covered in mud. I had to take some steam out of him somehow so I suggested we go visit Grandma. Ollie hates the car, but he laid quietly as we made the trip. We even brought the football because there is plenty of room to play at Grandma’s. Mom opened the door and started laughing. I thought about the love she had for every single dog we ever had. Oliver was quick to give my Mom a kiss, and then he stood beside her. The love between Mom and Dogs is a mutual bond. Through the years, Mom would make breakfast for the dogs.  Fried eggs, toast, bacon… She would wrap Christmas gifts for them. “To Jeter, Love Santa,” she would write on the cards.
