Boo!

A man fell to his death at the Atlanta Braves-New York Yankees game on Saturday night.

It appears that the man, allegedly, went to the rail in the second deck to scream his displeasure with the pinch-hitter that the Yankees were bringing to the plate in the 7th inning:

Alex Rodriguez.

Somehow the man lost his footing and went over the rail, landing on the concrete below where hundreds of fans watched him suffer on the ground.

Horrific.

It's always seemed strange to me because I work in the safety field where construction guys must work behind erected guardrails that are set at 39" to 45" with a mid-rail at the mid point.

And yet...go to a game or a play of even your kids high school and you'll see that the rails are set much, much lower than that.

That's the first point.

The second point is that it appears that the man was worked up into an absolute lather with his hatred for A-Rod who had been suspended for using steroids.

A-Rod has had boos rain down on his head in every state in this country.

But to try and scream from the upper deck...and to do it to the point where it actually takes your life away?

I'm trying to remember if I ever booed at a sporting event.

Perhaps.

When the Bills were great I remember not really caring for Bryan Cox of the Dolphins.

Cox had flipped off the Buffalo crowd.

I also remember being at Yankee Stadium in the years when the Yankees were coming off a World Series victory. Derek Jeter had started the next year slowly and was zero for his first twenty-five at-bats or so.

He grounded out to second in the first at-bat at the game I was attending and boos rained down!

They were booing Jeter!

(I wasn't!).

Coming off a World Series!!

(I actually think the Yankees won it again that same year).

But you certainly can see things like this coming.

People are truly invested in their sports teams.

They are paying big money for the chance to go to the game and voice their pleasure or displeasure.

Falling to your death as you boo a player?

Tragic.

Mind-boggling.

And raise those railings!

And put a net along the dugout lines!!

Come on, this is baseball...not the NFL...

...we actually care about people not dying as a result of the game!
