Scared of My Shadow

My wife was always the paranoid one. My absolute favorite was when she put the baby gate at the top of the stairs well after the kids were grown - I never noticed it because I was usually in bed before her, but one night I saw it and questioned her.

"It's to slow up a burglar if he breaks into the house," she said.
"You're insane," I replied.

Also, every night we have the same discussion about all of the doors being locked - it borders on the ridiculous. I stopped her by telling her I unlocked the doors before I came up.

"Really? Did you lock them?" she'd ask.
"You're insane," I'd reply.

She once phoned the school to see if the kids arrived safe because the bus driver wasn't the usual guy.

"You're insane," I said.

She once went to the school to ask if the children arrived safely.

"You're insane," I told her.

Yet now, I'm scared stiff. I've bolted awake each of the past two weeks - usually around 2:15 AM. I have to work hard to control my breathing and get back to sleep and of course, it is because the worse possible news is slow to be digested, if ever.

I drove to work today looking at all of the cars around me. Aware that any thing could happen at any moment to end all that I've worked for.

I'm suddenly insane, and now I know what my wife has battled for years and years.

I want to build a moat around the property to protect all that are dear to me. I want to grab all of my relatives and friends and wrap them in plastic. I want everyone I know and care about to have a full body scan to ensure that they are healthy.

I'm even ready to re-install the baby gate.

Dude, you've always been nuts too. The bolting awake thing seems to be going around, I haven't slept right in about, well since the first night. I could always sleep thru a hurricane, now I'm up like 15 times a night and it ain't the prostrate.

My Buddy, Dave

Way back in 1997, I started working with a steel erection company out of Syracuse. I was coming straight from a long stint with a steel erector here in Buffalo so I knew my stuff when it came to steel erection safety rules. On day one, I met with the safety director and he was just getting started as a safety guy, but man, he certainly cared about the guys he worked with. Dave was a good man from the start. Mom & Ollie

 Ollie Stadium is a mess. The heavy rains rendered the backyard a mud pit and even though we threw in the side yard, the Big O was looking for more, and we were both covered in mud. I had to take some steam out of him somehow so I suggested we go visit Grandma. Ollie hates the car, but he laid quietly as we made the trip. We even brought the football because there is plenty of room to play at Grandma’s. Mom opened the door and started laughing. I thought about the love she had for every single dog we ever had. Oliver was quick to give my Mom a kiss, and then he stood beside her. The love between Mom and Dogs is a mutual bond. Through the years, Mom would make breakfast for the dogs.  Fried eggs, toast, bacon… She would wrap Christmas gifts for them. “To Jeter, Love Santa,” she would write on the cards.
