The Yankees Win!

It’s been a hard, cold winter.

This afternoon the Yankees beat the Rays 4-0 as Goldschmidt and Bellinger both got hits.

I saw the photo of them lined up along the first base line and it made me smile.

There has been news too:

1). Aaron Boone was extended as manager.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. Boone is a good dude. He handles the media well and his players like him. He’s also very thoughtful, and charitable. In interviews he’s funny.

He hit the homer off Wakefield in 2003!

Yet, he makes goofy pitching decisions!!!

Game 1 of the World Series he went with Nestor over Uncle Tim Hill to get Freeman out.

Freeman hit a grand slam.

He also yanked Clay Holmes in Game 5 and went to Kahnle - a horrific decision that  I was screaming about because Kahnle had to face a minimum of 3 batters.

They all got on base!

I believe that Boone is a lot like the Bills coach - good leaders of men. Good guys. 

Maybe not great.

Then the news came down that the Yankees will now allow well-groomed beards.

This is huge news!

Yankees players have always been required to keep their hair short and their face clean-shaven.

I kind of like the rule.

The Red Sux players were absolutely filthy back in the day. 

But…

…I worked at a company where we needed to shave every day.

It kind of sucked.

If I missed a day of shaving I either had to stay away from the owner or listen to him say:

“Did you lose your razor? Either shave tonight or don’t come in tomorrow!”

It felt like a straight up power grab, and we’d make fun of the policy.

Still, I don’t want to see Yankees players with hair halfway down their back and ZZ Top beards.

It just wouldn’t look right!

Times change, I guess.

The real news is that baseball is back, bitch!

Go Yankees!!

And shave at least a little!

There’s Still Greatness

The other night I got home from work and Kathy and Sam were engaged in a game of backgammon. Sam had never played and wanted to learn. He got some late doubles and won his debut game. (I helped a little). And I thought of my buddy, Gag. We were roommates at Gannon back in 1983. We played at least 25 games of backgammon a night. By the end of the year he wound up beating me by just a couple of games out of a few thousand. That’s 60-year-old Gag in the photo - running the Disney marathon with his son, MJ - they do it every year. Eyes on the Horizon

My sister’s book is out there! Go get it!! It makes me so proud to see the book on Amazon, knowing that it’s very, very great! It’s been a long, long time since we were out in California, brainstorming my stories long before they were published. Carrie Lynn was writing, writing and writing some more through the years and I kept telling her… …”Go for it!” Well, she did!  To amazing results. Of course I was able to read the book as it was being put together, but I ordered a copy from Amazon yesterday and can’t wait to read it again. The shoe is on the other foot now as I have been sitting on a lot of my writing lately. I plan on getting it out there before the end of 2024, but for now: Carrie takes center stage! And it’s so great… …go get a copy!

Eyes on the Horizon Review

It’s always strange for me when someone I know tells me that they read my books and it’s weird for them because they think of me as they’re reading the story. I didn’t quite grasp what they meant, and hoped that they’d get caught up in the story and not me. I kind of get what they’re saying now because I just finished reading my sister Carrie Lynn’s excellent first book, ‘Eyes on the Horizon’. Now, I had read the story a long while ago, but a whole lot of work went into the end product. As a writer, I always try and guess along with the author because I can see the plot lines, and I’m often critical of plot lines that come out of nowhere as the author tries to unpaint the corner he’s stuck in. There was none of that in ‘Eyes on the Horizon’! I didn’t have any moments of, ‘Come on, now, that doesn’t work!’ I caught all the subtle lines that we shared in conversations and I was proud that Carrie defined her characters clearly and used them to propel the story forward.
