Disposable People

The number of veterans who have recently lost their paycheck is staggering.

The budget bill seems to include a gutting of Medicaid where about 72 million Americans get their healthcare.

SNAP benefits for working people who need food stamps to get by is going to be swept up and one of the GOP’s finest said that people are going to have to get off the couch and put down the popcorn and contribute.

A large percentage of people who get food stamps are working long hours at jobs that pay little money.

Most of the people who work at Walmart are on Medicaid because they are kept as part-time employees so that they don’t GET benefits!

I’m not on Medicaid but I feel for those people who won’t have healthcare.

I paid back my student loans before the mafia interest rates destroyed the lives of all who took a loan - those people who paid for decades and still owe more than they borrowed were preyed upon.

Car insurance is now downright criminal.

Corporations and the rich hide money to avoid paying taxes, and here we are.

I believe that what is being cut is going to lead to some devastating times for those on the fringes.

I also believe they’re being seen as disposable people.

Disabled?

Who needs you!

Elderly?

Hurry up and die!

Veterans?

Ah, we wrap ourselves in the flag and pretend to care, but good luck.

Homeless?

Hide better. We don’t want to see you dirtying up the streets!

And oh yeah…

…we do it all in the name of God, who we pretend to have a relationship with.

It’s been difficult to understand the news…

…but for millions at the bottom of the economic ladder, who are just trying to hang onto the bottom rung…

…well, they’re going to find out…

…that they’re disposable.

There’s Still Greatness

The other night I got home from work and Kathy and Sam were engaged in a game of backgammon. Sam had never played and wanted to learn. He got some late doubles and won his debut game. (I helped a little). And I thought of my buddy, Gag. We were roommates at Gannon back in 1983. We played at least 25 games of backgammon a night. By the end of the year he wound up beating me by just a couple of games out of a few thousand. That’s 60-year-old Gag in the photo - running the Disney marathon with his son, MJ - they do it every year. Eyes on the Horizon

My sister’s book is out there! Go get it!! It makes me so proud to see the book on Amazon, knowing that it’s very, very great! It’s been a long, long time since we were out in California, brainstorming my stories long before they were published. Carrie Lynn was writing, writing and writing some more through the years and I kept telling her… …”Go for it!” Well, she did!  To amazing results. Of course I was able to read the book as it was being put together, but I ordered a copy from Amazon yesterday and can’t wait to read it again. The shoe is on the other foot now as I have been sitting on a lot of my writing lately. I plan on getting it out there before the end of 2024, but for now: Carrie takes center stage! Eyes on the Horizon Review

It’s always strange for me when someone I know tells me that they read my books and it’s weird for them because they think of me as they’re reading the story. I didn’t quite grasp what they meant, and hoped that they’d get caught up in the story and not me. I kind of get what they’re saying now because I just finished reading my sister Carrie Lynn’s excellent first book, ‘Eyes on the Horizon’. Now, I had read the story a long while ago, but a whole lot of work went into the end product. As a writer, I always try and guess along with the author because I can see the plot lines, and I’m often critical of plot lines that come out of nowhere as the author tries to unpaint the corner he’s stuck in. There was none of that in ‘Eyes on the Horizon’! I didn’t have any moments of, ‘Come on, now, that doesn’t work!’ I caught all the subtle lines that we shared in conversations and I was proud that Carrie defined her characters clearly and used them to propel the story forward.
