Time for Presents!
Thinking of my Dad on the 87th year following his birth. He’s still missed and thought of every day by someone in the clan…
…so he’s around, walking beside us, as we battle life. I love when I say something that he might have said in the heat of a day…
…he taught us all well.
He wasn’t big on presents, and the older I get the more I understand it.
“What do you want for Christmas?” Isn’t a question I get, but my kids know that anything with the Yankees logo on it is safe.
Jake bought me a book and gave it to me early.
“Rolled the dice,” he said.
I hadn’t read it.
So, he did great!
We have changed the way we buy things too…for the last few weeks there were packages at the door every time I came home.
Kathy shopped on-line.
“Hey,” she said, one night. “Jake is working outside through the winter. I’m thinking of getting him a heated jacket.”
I laughed.
“Thirty-plus years I’ve been outside! This is Jake’s first year out there and it dawned on you that HE might get cold?”
“I’m ordering you one too,” she said.
And I know right when she ordered them and they arrived…
…because the money came out of my account!
Ahh, it’s the thought that counts, right?
Even thirty years late!
Yet, I still have a role in it all.
I shopped for the Christmas Day dinner.
We’re eating well!
And I also am on the hook for the cash presents that are handed out.
That is basically handled as a bank transaction….
…I thought back to the years when there were piles of presents under the tree…
The kids getting us out of bed at the crack of dawn…
…Santa getting the credit.
All great stuff…
…but I’m thankful for one thing…
…I don’t have to wrap anything!
Happy Birthday, Dad.
