Cheating at Golf
There are three videos going around that show the liar-in-Chief cheating at golf over in Scotland.
It’s a strange thing.
I play golf every week, and I’ve played with all sorts of partners.
Some are absolute sticklers for the rules as though they’re on tour.
“You addressed the ball! That’s a stroke!”
“You hit it into the woods. One in, one out, you’re hitting three, or you can tee off again and you’ll be hitting three when you get to the ball.”
Then there are guys who play it truly casual and will hit shots over again a hundred times a round.
We play it a little in the middle of those stringent rules.
Sunday was an example.
I had seriously hit 16 straight good drives.
On the way to the 17th hole, I mentioned that going 18 for 18 would be cool.
Then I promptly hit my drive into the pond on 17.
“We do believe in breakfast balls,” John said.
I was definitely going to swing again from the tee because I was pissed off at my lousy shot.
I put the ball within 3’ of the cup.
Made the putt for a 2.
Which, on the tour, would be a 4.
We are just out there playing.
The two didn’t feel great even though it was a tremendous shot.
If I were playing for anything, I’d card the 4.
I’m only keeping my score when we play. We don’t compete.
We take mulligans now and again because we are 60 year old men just enjoying each other’s company on a Sunday morning.
Here is the difference.
I don’t claim to be the club champion.
I shot a 79 a couple of years ago.
I did not have a mulligan that day. I didn’t use a foot wedge. I made my putts.
I wouldn’t have been able to write a 79 down if I had done anything like drop a ball out of my pocket.
Those days are few and far between.
What’s funny about it is that had I hit an ace on that re-shot I couldn’t claim that it was a hole in one.
Golf has some crazy rules.
We follow them.
If you’re out there consistently cheating, well, you’re cheating the game, and you’re cheating yourself, and if you claim to be a club champion….
…you certainly should follow all the rules.
But if you lie at golf to make yourself seem grand, you’re not a great golfer, you’re just a liar.
I got a birdie yesterday.
I also didn’t birdie 17.
