“Why Does Everything Suck?”

Our default show is ‘Modern Family’.

If we can’t find something to watch, or if we just have a half an hour, we find the comedy and off we go.

“I’m trying to memorize it,” I said, to Jake, when he saw that we had it on.

In an episode we were watching on Sunday morning, Claire is trying to fix the broken step, and she wasn’t doing very well.

“Why does everything have to suck?” She called out in frustration.

I laughed.

(That’s the great thing about the show - even after seeing it all plenty of times there are lines that catch us by surprise).

We all have those ‘Why does everything suck?” moments in living day to day.

We had watched a pretty bad movie on Saturday night, ‘Mother of the Bride’ and all the dialogue was corny.

The bride to be and the groom were having a moment.

“You are like the sun, the moon, the stars and the sky,” he said.

“Good Lord,” Kathy said.

“What?” I asked. “I’ve never said that to you?”

And we revisited that smaltzy dialogue when Claire yelled her line.

“That’s why this show is good,” I said. “It’s stuff that people actually say, not, ‘you are like the sun and the moon and the stars and the sky.’”

Here’s the thing:

We all have moments, days, maybe even weeks when it seems like the world is conspiring against us.

One thing after another seems to go wrong, and yet, we battle through, until it doesn’t suck anymore.

We have a wedding in less than two weeks. Matt is getting married, and I started my conversation about marriage with one of my favorite lines:

“Forever is a long freaking time,” I told him.

He laughed, and like a good groom to be, mentioned that she is cool.

“We all feel that way at the beginning,” I said. “There will still be days when you make a wrong turn on your way home and you wonder if you should just keep going in the wrong direction.”

He laughed again.

Then I gave him a little practical advice.

“You’ll have moments when you’re sick and tired of each other. When you do, just get away for a little while, it’ll pass and you’ll get over it, and then you’ll find your way back.”

In other words, you’ll feel like screaming, ‘Everything sucks!’

But things change fast, and we all get lucky now and then.

Some times everything does suck…

…you gotta’ hold out for those moments when they don’t.

That’s more practical than talking about how you love someone more than the sun and the moon and the stars.
